John Wayne
John Wayne's life and career spanned 5 decades and included some 142 leading man roles in nearly 200 films during his epic career. He was nominated three times for an Academy Award finally winning the Best Actor Oscar in 1969 for his unforgettable role in the movie "True Grit."
Born Marion Robert Morrison in 1907, Wayne's life became as big as the movies he made and is remembered for, in many respects. He gained the nickname of "Duke" during his school days while living in California and eventually went on to play football on a scholarship at the University of Southern California. After an accident cut his athletic career short, Duke took a small role in a film to help pay for school and fell in love with it. His films and career continue to make an impact today and John Wayne is still considered to be one of the Greatest Male Stars of All Time according to the American Film Institute.
John Wayne also become an iconic American Hero during his life. He was unabashedly pro-American and never hesitated to speak his mind about his love of his country. His TV Special "Tribute To America" included many popular stars and guests who shared Wayne's feelings about America. Duke died in June of 1979, but even still he stands as a enduring American legend.
