Statler BrothersFor almost 40 years, The Statler Brothers - Don Reid, Harold Reid, Phil Balsley, Jimmy Fortune and Lew Dewitt - entertained audiences with their hit records and sold-out performances. Having started out as a Gospel group in 1955, it wasn't until 1965, during an 81/2 year run under Johnny Cash, that The Statler's became a household name with their hit "Flowers On The Wall". When they left Cash in 1972, they went on to record such hits through the 70's and 80's as "Bed Of Roses," "Do You Remember These," "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine," and "Elizabeth." During their career they earned more than a dozen ACM, CMA and Grammy Awards making them the most awarded act in country music history. The Statler's were also known for their love of comedy and parody. During the 70's they recorded two comedy albums as Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys. During the 80's and 90's, they were also a mainstay on TNN (The Nashville Network) with their videos, variety shows, as regular hosts of the Music City Awards, and their much beloved The Statler Brothers Show which remained strong until it's end in 1998.
After a career that saw the release of over 40 albums and countless concerts, in 2002 The Statler Brothers retired from recording and touring with their Farewell Tour that ended in their hometown of Staunton, Virginia on October 26. Each member continues to remain busy: Don has written and released three books of his own. He also co-wrote Random Memories, the history of the Statler Brothers, with his brother, Harold. Phil continues to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Statler business there in Staunton. And Jimmy moved to Nashville to pursue a solo career. The Statler's were inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame in 2007 and The Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2008 to honor a career that has entertained millions and influenced countless others.
