Mel McDaniel

By the late 1970s and early '80s gut-level honky-tonk Country had made way for "drive" music, tempo songs that made people feel good driving to and from their jobs. Some of those songs were pure pap, but some were a lot of fun, well-written, well-produced and well sung. One of the best Country singers during that era was Oklahoma-born Mel McDaniel. This fine collection of Mel's biggest hits includes his #1 Country Classic "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" and "Louisiana Saturday Night," both written by premier Country songwriter Bob McDill, as well as the gospel-tinged "Stand Up," and classic toe-tappers "Big Ole Brew," "Real Good Feel Good Song," and "Take Me To The Country." Mel came to Nashville in the late 1960s to become a songwriter but as it happens with most Music City pilgrims, his dreams were not working out so he moved on to Anchorage, Alaska, and had a measure of success as a honky-tonk singer. But Mel still had dreams of the big time so in 1973 he moved back to Nashville and soon was making a living as a demo singer—someone who sang on sessions to record demonstration tapes for publishers and songwriters. One of those songwriters, Johnny McRae, helped him get a deal with Capitol Records and by late 1977 he was a steady visitor to the Country record charts. His biggest hit, "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On," was nominated for Country Music Association's Single of the Year in 1985. He also became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Throughout much of his recording career Mel kept up a busy performing schedule, often logging more than 200 dates a year. In the late '80s and early '90s, he was a favorite in the theaters of Branson, Missouri. Although he never became a huge seller, many of his records were radio favorites. His voice is a winning blend of mellow and grit, perfect for the Country songs of his era. He scored with songs he wrote himself, and songs written by others. This album includes originals of nearly all of his biggest recordings, the songs that built a fine recording career for a great singer. —Michael Kosser
