Back in the 1950s, after the death of Hank Williams, country music began to lose favor with the public. Paradoxically, during this period, country records began to cross over to the pop charts at an unparalleled rate. Over the next decade, country stars like Marty Robbins, Webb Pierce, Wanda Jackson, Faron Young, Johnny Horton and many others had huge pop hits on their country records.apitol Records for another decade—always charting—sometimes recapturing earlier success, as in 1967 with "Once" and in 1968 with "Just For You", both of which reached the Number 4 slot on the Billboard country charts.Some country experts cite the dramatic vocal arrangements of "Gone" as a pioneering example of what would be known as the "Nashville Sound". His follow up to "Gone", "A Fallen Star," was Top Ten and received considerable pop airplay. In the fall of 1960 lightning struck once more for Ferlin, this time in the form of "Wings Of A Dove," a gospel song written by Bob Ferguson, who would later produce many hits on RCA. "Wings Of A Dove" made it to #1 and stayed on the country charts for 36 weeks, a huge achievement at a time when a typical country chart listed the top 30 hits. "Wings Of A Dove" was another major pop crossover for Ferlin, his last. He continued to record for Capitol Records for another decade—always charting—sometimes recapturing earlier success, as in 1967 with "Once" and in 1968 with "Just For You", both of which reached the Number 4 slot on the Billboard country charts. Ferlin was a versatile entertainer who could enthrall audiences with his magnificent voice but also kept them in stitches with a comic persona named Simon Crum. Recording as Simon Crum, he had a Top Five smash with "Cuzz Yore So Sweet", then in 1958 he hit it even bigger with "Country Music Is Here To Stay," Number Two on the country Billboard chart in 1959. Before stardom, Ferlin served for five years as a Merchant Marine during World War II. After the war he lived in Bakersfield, California, working as a disc jockey while singing locally. In 1952 Country Music legend Cliffie Stone helped Ferlin get a record deal with Capitol Records. Over the next two decades he would chart more than 30 singles on Capitol, including seven Top Tens. As time passed he matured into one of best entertainers in the Country Music business. We believe this album provides a solid sampling of Ferlin Husky's very best recorded efforts.
