Eddy Arnold - The Comeback Years
Eddy Arnold was born on May 15, 1918, into a family of sharecroppers in rural Chester County, near the small town of Henderson, Tennessee. Who could have predicted that this "Tennessee Plowboy" would become the Country Music Association's very first Entertainer of the Year and a legendary member of the Country Music Hall of Fame by the time he was only 48. More amazing, at the time of his induction into the Hall of Fame, Eddy was still putting out No. 1 Country records! That kind of enduring career will most likely never occur again. Perhaps the secret to Eddy's longevity has been his ability to relate to so many different kinds of people through his music. He has often been quoted as saying: "I'm a Heinz 57 singer. I sing so many different kinds of songs which mean something different to many kinds of people." Truer words have rarely been spoken. Consider the fact that Eddy Arnold has charted hit records in every decade since the 1940s, scoring 28 No. 1 records that have remained No. 1 for an astounding 145 weeks—a phenomenal achievement in any genre of music and by any standard imaginable. Eddy made his radio debut in 1936 on a small Jackson, Tennessee, station. He soon became an audience favorite on larger Memphis and Jackson radio stations, and this success eventually led to his landing a record contract with RCA in 1944. First managed by the legendary Colonel Tom Parker (who, of course, first managed Hank Snow and then Elvis), Eddy began his meteoric rise not only to the top of the Country charts, but also to the top of the entertainment world. Although Eddy was still charting successfully during the mid-1950s into the early 1960s, he did hit what was, for him, a dry spell of ten years, during which he did not see the top of the Country charts. However, beginning with "What's He Doing In My World" in 1965, Eddy would stage a dramatic and long-lasting comeback to the top of the charts with an almost unbroken string of 15 top-10 hits, 7 of which made it to No. 1, plus 6 others breaking the top 5. And that is what this collection is all about. These are the songs that made Eddy Arnold an entertainment icon and legend. Starting in the late 1960s through the 1970s, Eddy appeared before millions of fans in person and on television, and was twice a featured performer at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York. He was a co-host on the hugely popular and nationally syndicated "Mike Douglas Show," and was a favorite fill-in host for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." No longer just the Tennessee Plowboy, Eddy transformed his performance style by adopting a smoother, more polished and romantic sound that would make him the premier Country crooner not only of his time, but, perhaps, for all time. As his plaque in the Country Music Hall of Fame states: "He has been a powerful influence in setting musical tastes. His singing, warm personality, and infectious laugh have endeared Eddy to friends and fans everywhere." –Winston Harless
