Melba Montgomery

Melba Montgomery is Country as cornbread. Although she reached the heights of her career in 1974 with her #1 smash "No Charge," many fans remember her primarily for her duets with Charlie Louvin and George Jones. This collection includes five of her duets with Charlie, five classic duets with George and four of her finest solo efforts. Included are "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", a duet with George that made it to the Number Three spot on the Billboard charts and two solid charting efforts with Charlie, with classic Bobby Braddock tunes, "Did You Ever" and "Something To Brag About."Melba Montgomery was born in Iron City, Tennessee, and raised in Florence, Alabama. In the 1970s Florence and surrounding towns became an important center of pop and R&B recording but Melba was so Country there was never any question in what musical direction her talents would take her. Early on, the great Roy Acuff tapped her to be a member of his road show and in 1958 she got her first major record deal with United Artists. There she had a pair of records that charted in the Twenties—"Hall Of Shame" and "The Greatest One Of All"—but it was her five duets with Jones on United Artists that got her the most attention. She then moved over to Musicor Records and recorded a hit duet with Gene Pitney. Jones had also signed with Musicor, so he and Melba resumed their recording relationship with less success than the United Artists collaboration. By this time Melba was so well accepted as a duet artist that when she came to Capitol in the early '70s it seemed natural to team her with Charlie Louvin, who had built his career on great harmony duets with his brother Ira. After a brief stay at Capitol, she then recorded for Elektra and in 1974 she scored big with "No Charge". She later went back to United Artists and had one more Top Twenty record, a Country cover of the Chip Taylor-written pop classic, "Angel Of The Morning." Melba's brother, Peanut Montgomery, was a stellar Country songwriter who wrote a number of hits for Jones but will probably be remembered best for the Emmylou Harris classic, "One Of These Days." Melba also developed into a successful songwriter penning a number of her Jones' duets, including "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds". —Michael Kosser
