Charley Pride - The Gentle Giant of Country Music br>Quite simply, Charley Pride is one of the most successful and beloved Country singers of all time—period! Particularly because he originally tried to make it as a professional baseball player, he has often been referred to as the "Jackie Robinson" of Country Music. And even though he did break color barriers, that's not the reason he has enjoyed such a phenomenal career. Charley Pride is as pure a Country singer as there has ever been, and he has never forsaken the truth and purity of that style. What's more, Charley Pride's love for Country Music is as honest and deep as it comes. Growing up in Mississippi, his idol was Hank Williams, Sr., and you can hear traces of Hank in Charley's clear, confident voice. But more important, you can hear Charley's own emotional connection with the songs and with his fans. to audition for Chet Atkins. Charley's first cut, "Snakes Crawl At Night," was a top-charter in 1966, and after a string of 7 top-10 hits through 1969, Charley began a mesmerizing stay at the very top of the Country charts from 1969 until 1983, with 29 No. 1 hits and another 12 songs that broke the top 5. In January 1967, Charley made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. Remarkably, he would not become a member of the Opry until 1993. The 1970s were truly Charley's grand period in which he won just about every Country award there is. In fact, Cashbox magazine crowned him in 1980 as the top male Country artist of the 1970s. And that is what this collection is all about. These original cuts are the great hits of the 1970s and then some, and they remain fresh and vibrant today. Recently elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame, there is no living Country Music Legend who better exemplifies what it means to be a Country Great than Charley Pride. And long after he is gone, his music will remain for generations of true Country Music lovers. –Winston HarlessFor an entire listing of all CHARLEY PRIDE items click here
