Jean Shepard
For many years the Country charts were ruled by the guys. Then along came Kitty Wells and right behind her came Jean Shepard. Singing with conviction, Jean hit the airwaves in 1953 with "A Dear John Letter," a duet with an uncredited Ferlin Husky. The record hit #1 and was one of the biggest Country hits of the year as well as a pop crossover. Over more than two decades with Capitol Records, Jean added numerous Top Ten records and since 1955 has been one of the Grand Ole Opry's best known stars. Jean was born in Paul's Valley, Oklahoma, and given the name Ollie Imogene. In 1945 her parents moved her to southern California. Capitol Records was headquartered out there and when Hank Thompson heard her sing he brought her to Capitol executive Ken Nelson. Her solo career took off in 1955 with two Top Five hits, "A Satisfied Mind" and "Beautiful Lies." Her recording career then faded a bit and the hits stopped coming altogether after she married Hawkshaw Hawkins in 1960. She was devastated by his death in the airplane crash that also killed Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas in 1963. It took her out of the business for a time but in 1964 Jean made a strong comeback with another Top Five hit, "Second Fiddle (To An Old Guitar)." She stayed with Capitol into the early '70s then switched to United Artists Records and scored with still another Top Five record "Slippin' Away," a vintage piece of Bill Anderson songwriting. That was about it for Jean as far as hit-making was concerned, but 30 years later she is still a regular on the Grand Ole Opry. Her voice has lost none of its power and if you watch her carefully on stage you will see her directing the tempo of her band with her hand, behind her back. She has always been known as a woman who speaks her mind. Her recordings are all uncompromisingly Country. Jean Shepard was never one to hold her finger to the wind and depart from her roots in a vain quest for another hit. This collection includes some of her biggest hits including her two duets with Ferlin Husky (who does not sing but speaks on these records), and her Top Ten duet with Ray Pillow, a piece of pure joy called "I'll Take The Dog." Jean Shepard is a Country treasure. Enjoy this wonderful album and tune in to the Opry to hear her live while she's still entertaining us with her unmistakable stylings. —Michael Kosser
