Porter Wagoner is an essential and vital part of any discussion of popular Country Music. Born in the "Show Me" state of Missouri on August 30, 1930, this pioneering figure of Country Music helped to bring "hillbilly music" to the forefront of American culture and has been showing American audiences for more than 50 years why he is one of the most conspicuous and enduring of Country artists. No one loves Pure Country Music or the Grand Ole Opry more than Porter Wagoner, and that deep affection shines through every Porter Wagoner song and has produced chart-topping hits for more than four decades.

And Porter's love for the great themes of Country Music is a personal and honest love that comes from the early struggles of his upbringing. His family lost their farm in the early 1940s and Porter had to quit school after the eighth grade. More difficult for Porter was the devastating teenage death of his beloved brother, Glenn Lee. However, Glenn's untimely death ultimately inspired Porter to carry on the family musical tradition that had been started by his great-grandfather, a school house fiddle player.

Porter had his start on a local radio station in Springfield, Missouri, and was performing on a weekly show by the fall of 1951. Like his discovery of so many other great Country artists, Red Foley took an interest in Porter and added him to the cast of the then fledgling "Ozark Jamboree," the show that gave Porter his first real national exposure. Foley is also given credit for teaching Porter the finer points of showmanship and song interpretation, lessons that Porter took to heart and which would serve him so well during his vastly popular syndicated television series that would ultimately have an audience of over 45 million and run for 20 years.

Although Porter has always been noted for his flashy suits, bristling with rhinestones from the collar of his shirt to the toes of his boots, he is, above all else, a masterful storyteller with a deep appreciation for the traditional and timeless Country themes of God, hard times, lost love, betrayal and revenge. He first made the top 10 in 1954 with the high-energy "Company's Comin'," and soon hit the big time with his first No. 1 hit, "A Satisfied Mind," in 1955. The song not only stayed at No. 1 for 4 weeks and on the Country charts for 8 months, it became a Country standard that would help a number of other artists hit the top 10. During the 1960s, Porter was a regular top-charter, and enjoyed huge success with songs that spoke to the downtrodden. Emotionally charged, uncompromising story-songs like "Eat, Drink And Be Merry (Tomorrow You'll Cry)," "The Carroll County Accident," "Misery Loves Company," "Skid Row Joe," "Sorrow On The Rocks" and "The Cold Hard Facts Of Life" all became top hits for Porter, with the latter being nominated for three Grammy awards.

But of course, no discussion of Porter is complete without Dolly Parton. They forged a vocal style that set the standard for all Country male-female duos that would follow. For more than a decade into the early 1980s, Porter and Dolly won multiple Country Music Association awards and consistently made their way to the top of the charts with hits like "If Teardrops Were Pennies," "Making Plans," "Just Someone I Used To Know" and their No. 1 "Please Don't Stop Loving Me." Combining his years with Dolly, his influence on so many other future stars, his beloved stature as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, and his long-standing and legendary solo career, Porter Wagoner's impact on Country Music is secure and unquestioned. –Winston Harless
