Brother Dave Gardner Biography |

Of all Southern comedians past and present, Brother Dave Gardner ranks among the best of the best. And though his comedic style seemed tailor-made more for the Southern sensibility, Northerners couldn't help but laugh, too, and were soon whooping it at his devilishly funny routines. Brother Dave Gardner got his start in Memphis, TN, as a drummer and singer. He recorded a handful of moderately successful singles, including the original, "White Silver Sands." Brother Dave, the comedian, was discovered when Chet Atkins saw him doing his comedy routines between drum solos. Brother Dave Gardner released his first album, Rejoice, Dear Hearts! in 1960 and followed it with the more successful, Kick Thy Own Self.
Brother Dave Gardner was never one to look at his watch during a routine. Instead, he would smoke three of his long custom-made cigarettes and by the time he finished them he knew he was out of time. After a few run-ins with the law in the '70s for marijuana possession and tax evasion, Brother Dave Gardner was eventually dropped from RCA Victor. He landed at Capitol Records for a while before moving on to several smaller labels. Brother Dave Gardner passed away in 1983.
