Cal Smith Biography |
|
Cal Smith was a West Coast disc jockey who left California in the early 60s to front Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours. From 1967 through 1971 Cal Smith recorded for Kapp then Decca with no notable success. Usually when an artist has five years of major releases without a hit it's a sign that the folks have rejected him. But in 1972 Cal Smith suddenly struck it big with a Top Five smash, "I've Found Someone Of My Own." "The Lord Knows I'm Drinkin'," released at the end of '72, became one of the biggest Country hits of 1973, and the following year Cal Smith had two more #1's on the Don Wayne tunes "Country Bumpkin" and "It's Time To Pay The Fiddler." "Country Bumpkin" was selected as Country Music Association Single of the Year and remains one of Country's great classics.
