Charlie Rich Biography |
|
Nashville's top songwriters were so in love with the vocal stylings of Charlie Rich that they longed for him to record their songs even before he made it big in Country. At that point he was more or less a has-been pop artist with hits like "Lonely Weekends" and "Big Boss Man" well in his past. In 1967 he signed with Epic Records and his producer was the great Billy Sherrill, who had produced some of his pop sessions. It took a while for Charlie Rich to happen, but in 1972 he scored a Top Ten Country single with "I Take It On Home." His follow-up, "Behind Closed Doors," was one of the great Country hits of the '70s and earned Charlie and the song's writer, Kenny O'Dell, many awards. From there it was one hit after another, songs like "Most Beautiful Girl," "A Very Special Love Song," "Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High)," and "I Love My Friend." When he covered an old song he put his own stamp on it ("She Called Me Baby," and "My Elusive Dreams"). In the history of modern Country, Charlie Rich was one of the best.
