Daniel O'Donnell Biography |
|
Daniel O'Donnell (b. 12-12-61 Kincasslagh, Country Donegal, Eire) is the biggest selling "Irish Country" artist of all time. His success is due in large part to a smooth sentimental voice coupled with clean-cut looks. O'Donnell's career began in the early 80's, singing backup for his sister, Margo, in her folk/country band. He made his UK debut in 1985 where his popularity with the female audience was instant. O'Donnell signed with the Irish record label, Ritz Records. It was here that Daniel O'Donnell became known as "The Boy From Donegal." Two Sides of Daniel O'Donnell was released in 1985. A year later, O'Donnell released "I Need You," which became his first album to reach the UK country charts. He also released Don't Forget to Remember," which became his first #1 UK country album. Four subsequent albums would also make it to #1. In 1990, Daniel O'Donnell recorded The Last Waltz in Nashville with famed producer Allen Reynolds. It was his most 'country' album to date, and it debuted at #1 on the UK country charts. A controversy flared up in the United Kingdom as to whether O'Donnell's music was country or pop. His albums were deemed pop and removed from the country charts. The public didn't abide by this decision and caused such a ruckus that the decision was reversed. Daniel O'Donnell's imported album sales have flourished in areas with heavy Irish populations, and several of his concert appearances, including a show at Carnegie Hall in 1991, have all been very successful.
