Don Gibson Biography

Don Gibson was born April 3, 1928, in Shelby, North Carolina. One of the most popular and influential singer/songwriters of the 50's and 60's, Don Gibson began playing guitar in high school for local radio stations and dances. He released his first single, "Sweet Dreams," in 1956. Big-time success, however, wasn't quick to come a knockin'. Regardless, Don continued to record quality country material over the next couple of years. Don Gibson's career finally started taking off thanks to RCA chief Oh, Lonesome Me". Don was now on his way. His career became such a success so quickly that he was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry in 1958. Unfortunately, in the late '60s, Don Gibson also suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction. He did bounce back, however, clean and sober in the early 70's and resumed his career. Don Gibson continued touring and performing during the '80s and '90s at the Grand Ole Opry until passing away on November 17th, 2003. He was 73.
