Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver Biography |
|
Since the early years of his career in the 1960's, Doyle Lawson is known as one of the greatest mandolin pickers. The Kingsport, TN native formed his own group, Quicksilver, and honed in on a very original bluegrass-gospel sound. In 1963, Lawson joined Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys on five-string banjo. He then, in 1966, joined up with another ex-banjo picker from the Sunny Mountain Boys, J.D. Crowe. Obviously Crowe was the man on banjo, but Doyle took up guitar and mandolin detail. He continued to play with both acts until joining the Country Gentlemen in 1971 for an eight year / ten album stint. In 1979, Doyle assembled Quicksilver and began to set himself apart from his mentors. Quicksilver's original lineup was Doyle on mandolin, Terry Baucom on banjo, Jimmy Haley on guitar and Lou Reid on the doghouse bass. Lawson and Quicksilver released several albums and continue to entertain bluegrass fans all around the world.
