Hank Penny Biography

In the late 1930s a wonderful, free-wheeling brand of dance music emerged in the honky tonks of the South. Known as western swing, it combined elements of cowboy music, Country music and popular swing music. One of the popular exponents of that genre was Hank Penny, who formed his own band, The Radio Cowboys, in 1937. His bands were based successively in Atlanta, Cincinnati and Los Angeles over several decades and were always honored and respected as great bands. Hank Penny's signature hit, recorded in 1939, was the Rex Griffin tune, "Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon."
