Homer & Jethro Biography |

Homer and Jethro were two top-notched musicians who successfully combined impressive musical abilities with a helping dose of humor and biting satire. Homer D. Haynes (b. 7-27-17 Knoxville, TN) and Jethro (b. Kenneth Burns 3-10-23 Knoxville, TN) met and began working together as teens. Homer played guitar while Jethro played banjo and mandolin. After hearing a pop star give an insulting version of country/bluegrass music on the radio, Homer and Jethro reciprocated by singing current pop songs with a hillbilly twist. Homer & Jethro began their recording careers with King Records in Cincinnati. By the end of 1948 Homer & Jethro were signed to RCA Victor where they would remain throughout the 60's. Now located in Chicago, Homer & Jethro got their first hit, "Baby, It's Cold Outside," with the help of June Carter on vocals. The song gained attention from WLS and secured Homer & Jethro a spot on the National Barn Dance. In 1949, they joined what was to become the Grand Ole Opry, and they would stay on the Opry until 1958. Homer and Jethro won their only Grammy with "The Battle of Kookamonga," a spoof of Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New Orleans." Homer & Jethro's career really took off in the 60's with the Southern comedy craze, and they found themselves guest starring on such major television shows as The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres." Homer & Jethro would continue performing until Homer's death in 1971. The duo was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
