Jimmie Davis Biography

Known for his unique mixture of country and blues, James "Jimmie" Davis (9-11-1899 Beech Springs, LA) grew up the son of a poor sharecropper. He earned a degree from Louisiana College at Pineville followed by a Masters degree from Louisiana State University. Davis worked as a history teacher upon graduating, and a year later he began singing for a local radio station. His first recording was in 1928. The following year he signed with the Victor label, recording in a style reminiscent of Jimmie Rodgers that illustrated a fondness for double entendre. Jimmie moved from the Victor label to Decca in 1934 where he scored his first major hit, "Nobody's Darlin' But Mine." Davis is probably best known for "You Are My Sunshine," a song that has become a country standard. The song would go on to become a theme song for Davis as he ventured into politics. Jimmy Davis would go on to serve two terms as the governor of Louisiana as well as starring in a number of films in the 40s. In his first term as governor, Jimmie Davis had five Top-5 singles, including the #1 hit, "There's Moon Over My Shoulder." He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1971 and continued performing into the 90's. Jimmie Davis died on November 5th, 2000, at the age of 101.
