Kathy Mattea Biography

Kathy Mattea's unique style of blending bluegrass, folk and gospel music made her one of the most successful female country artists of the late 80's and 90's. Born June 21, 1959, in Cross Lane, West Virginia, Kathy received classical voice training while in junior high school. In 1976 while attending college, she became part of the bluegrass band, Pennsboro. Two years later she left the band and moved to Nashville where she worked odd jobs and honed her songwriting skills. A strong demo tape landed her at Mercury Records in 1983, and a year later her first album was released, followed by a second album a year later. Chart success, however, didn't come until her third album, "Walk the Way the Wind Blows" where her cover of Nancy Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime" became a Top-5 single. Subsequent singles "Train of Memories" and "You're the Power" both landed in the Top-10. Kathy Mattea's 1987 album, "Untasted Honey," featured two #1 hits with "Goin' Gone" and "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses." Two more songs ("Untold Stories" and "Life as We Knew It") became Top-5 hits. 1989's "Willow in the Wind" also went gold and featured the #1 hits "Burnin' Old Memories" and "Come From the Heart." In 1989 Kathy Mattea won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal for "Where've You Been," a song co-written by her husband, Jon Vezner.
