Kingston Trio Biography

The Kingston Trio were the most popular folk group of the late 50s and early 60s. Their clean polished harmonies contrasted sharply to the raw vocals of later folkies like Bob Dylan. The Kingston Trio's best known recordings included "Tom Dooley," "MTA," "Tijuana Jail," "Scotch And Soda," and the Hoyt Axton classic, "Greenback Dollar." The Kingston Trio wrote many of their own songs, and some folk fans mocked them because they did not do the traditional folk songs - they were just ahead of their time. In time most folk singers striving for commercial success either wrote their own or recorded the songs of contemporary songwriters.
