Light Crust Doughboys Biography

Back in the early days of commercial radio a manufacturing company might hire a singer or a group to promote its product. So it was in Fort Worth Texas, back in 1930 with the Light Crust Doughboys, a string band meant to plug a brand of flour. But this band had some special members, including Bob Wills and singer Milton Brown. They became very popular in the area and recorded for Victor as the Fort Worth Doughboys. In '32 and '33 Brown and Wills left the Light Crust Doughboys but new members moved the band forward and in 1934 they released a big hit called "Beautiful Texas." The Light Crust Doughboys were successful through the 30s, broke up when World War II came, then resumed activities when the war ended. Rumor is they're still around, making happy music in Texas, still known to many as one of the great pioneer groups of western swing.
