More than any country star of the 20th Century, the music of Merle Haggard is seamlessly intertwined with his life story. Born Merle Ronald Haggard to poor but hard-working parents on April 6, 1937 in Bakersfield, California, Merle's father, James, played the guitar and the fiddle and possessed an impressive singing voice eerily similar to Bing Crosby's, one of the many great artists whose records Merle heard throughout his hard-scrabble childhood. Bing Crosby, Eddy Arnold, Sons of the Pioneers, and the Ink Spots were the order of the day in the Haggard household, as were all of the big bands, from Tommy Dorsey to Glen Miller. This blend of music would color Merle's own music as he grew to become one of the most influential and important Country stars of the 20th century.
