Merle Travis Biography

Merle Travis is generally remembered as the writer of one of the greatest hits of all time, "Sixteen Tons," a monster for Tennessee Ernie Ford. He had a long career as a hit songwriter, singer, and one of the really important guitar pickers in Country music history. As a child in the Kentucky coal country, Merle Travis learned finger picking and made it into a high art. In the forties he recorded a number of hits for Capitol Records and wrote some huge hits, including "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette" and "So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed." In 1974 Merle Travis and his buddy Chet Atkins won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Performance, and in 1977 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame.
