Sheb Wooley, American country singer and character actor, died in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 82. Wooley was diagnosed with leukemia back in 1996. On Monday, Sept. 15th, 2003, he was admitted to a hospital in Nashville. A day later he died. Wooley had just paid tribute to American country singer Johnny Cash on Sunday. Cash, also a resident of Nashville, died on Friday, September 12. Sheb Wooley was a genuine cowboy from Erick, Oklahoma, who came to Nashville not long after high school to become a country radio star. He had a little success then he moved to California where he carved out a movie career that saw him appear in movies like "High Noon," "Giant" and "Hoosiers." In 1948 Sheb Wooley signed with MGM Records and recorded for them over the next quarter century, sometimes as Sheb Wooley, sometimes as the dipsomaniacal Ben Colder. In 1958 Sheb struck it big with a #1 pop smash, "Purple People Eater." Four years later he had a #1 country hit, "That's My Pa," and four years after that Ben Colder had a Top Ten Country record with "Almost Persuaded, Number 2." Sheb Wooley's Ben Colder character was also honored as the CMA Comedian of the Year in 1968. And over a six decade span Sheb Wooley also wrote hundreds of songs. br>Sheb Wooley Discography |
