Spade Cooley Biography

California has always had its own unique Country scene, and during and after World War II the big name in Western swing on the West Coast was Spade Cooley. His early records on Okeh at the end of the war, " Shame On You," and " I've Taken All I'm Gonna Take From You," were big hits with Tex Williams doing the vocals. So were his next few records on his next label, Columbia. In 1947 Spade Cooley became a pioneer TV performer and also appeared in a number of movies. In the early fifties times changed and his career declined. After a brief stint on Decca Spade Cooley began having heart problems. In 1961 he beat his wife to death and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Spade Cooley died in 1969.
