Stoneman Family Biography

Back in the fifties several children of the great Pop Stoneman helped put together a band called the Bluegrass Champs. A year later they were the winners on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts TV show. Eventually the group became all Stonemans, and it was logical that they become The Stoneman Family. They cut a few records and bounced around the country, but it wasn't till 1965 when the Stoneman Family signed with MGM Records that they began to show up on Country radio. Over the next three years The Stoneman Family charted five times, their biggest record being "Five Little Johnson Girls," which made it to #21 on the Billboard Country singles chart. During this time Pop Stoneman was part of the act, but in 1968 he died. The Stoneman Family never charted again, but for years they continued to tour with a high energy, good humored show that their fans loved. Roni Stoneman , the banjo player, made it big on Hee-Haw, and Donna, the dancing mandolin player, moved into Gospel.
