Stringbean Biography

Stringbean was the showbiz name of David Akeman, a fine banjo musician, a wonderful comedic character and a great link in country music history. Back in the 40s a young Stringbean was a protégé of the great Uncle Dave Macon and some sources say he was Bill Monroe's first banjo player. Stringbean was soon a part of the Grand Ole Opry but he didn't really get into recording until the early 60s when he did some well-received albums for Starday Records. Titles included "Old Time Banjo Pickin' and Singin'" and "A Salute to Uncle Dave Macon." In 1969 he became a regular on the TV show Hee Haw. Four years later, at the peak of his fame, Stringbean and his wife Estelle were brutally murdered in their home by two Nashville men seeking to rob them.
