Tammy Wynette Biography

Of the fourteen #1 records recorded by women in the 60s, eight were by Tammy Wynette, the woman with the teary catch in her voice who was dubbed the "First Lady of Country Music" by her publisher Al Gallico. In 1965 Virginia Wynette Pugh left her beautician's job in Birmingham, Alabama, and took her three young children to live in Nashville. Somehow she wangled an audience with Epic Records producer, Billy Sherrill, and he signed her. Tammy Wynette almost immediately cut a hit called "Apartment Number 9." Tammy was the CMA "Female Vocalist of the Year" from 1968 through 1970, and her hit record "Stand By Your Man" won a Grammy. In 1971 Tammy Wynette married George Jones. Their personal relationship was stormy, but they cut some great duets, most notably "Golden Ring," a #1 smash hit in 1976.
