Tanya Tucker Biography

Tanya Tucker has never known the meaning of the words "struggling artist." However to call her a child star, is to disgrace to the many accomplishments she has had throughout her career. She was born in Seminole, Texas, in 1958. From an early age, Tucker was bit by the music bug. She started out trying to learn how to play the saxophone, but she then devoted her life to singing. Her talent led her family to move to Las Vegas. She immediately started to receive gigs all around the Vegas strip. Tucker's father began to shop her demo to various people in Nashville. It eventually fell into the hands of Billy Sherrill. He fell in love with her voice immediately, and signed her to Columbia Records. Tucker was all of 13 years old. Throughout her career, her song choices were always more mature than her actual age. When it was time to record her debut album, she was propositioned with "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" but turned it down for "Delta Dawn." Even though, Donna Fargo had a bigger hit with "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA," Tucker's did not do that shabby either. "Delta Dawn" was a #6 country hit, and also appeared on the pop charts. The 1970's were a goldmine for Tucker. She had a top ten hit with "Love's the Answer," and then a year later she had a #1 hit with "What's Your Mama's Name." She subsequently had two more #1 hits with "Blood Red and Goin' Down" and "Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone)", which was written by David Alan Coe. The mid '70s were not as successful for Tucker, but the 1978 album produced the #1 hit with "Texas(When I Die)." She fell into a slump for a few years, with little hit success. Arista Records signed her, and her hit making prowess precipitated again. She had a top ten hit with "Feel So Right", but then for the next two years she hit another dry spell. She then switched to Capitol Records, and the hits just kept coming. "One Love at a Time" was a #3 hit for Tucker, and followed up with a slew of number one hits and top tens. "Just Another Love," "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love," "Strong Enough to Bend" were all #1 hits during this time. The 1990's were just as hit-worthy as the 80's. Say what you will about Tanya's personal life, but no one can deny her staying power.
