Vernon Dalhart was just one of an estimated 135 names under which Marion Try Slaughter recorded back in the 1920s and '30s. Scholars have estimated that in Vernon Dalhart's career he voiced at least five thousand record releases. We remember the name Vernon Dalhart because under that name Slaughter recorded "The Wreck Of The Old '97" b/w (as they used to say) "The Prisoner's Song." That record sold many millions, and today we think of it as one of the first great Country hits. He also cut many topical songs of the time such as "The Death Of Floyd Collins" and "The John T. Scopes Trial," which we consider to have been Country records. Although Vernon Dalhart's style was closer to operatic than what we consider country, he WAS born in Texas and he DID play the harmonica. In 1981 Vernon Dalhart was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and he belongs there because millions of Country folks spent their hard-earned pennies to buy his records.
